| Atria strengthens its operations in Nurmo
Atria Plc, one of the biggest companies in the food industry in Finland has strengthened its operations strongly in Nurmo. The production facility in Nurmo has modern production space of approximately 130 000 m², out of which the main part was built in 1990s or later. 53 percent of Atria’s turnover comes from the Nurmo factory where a million packets are produced for consumer markets every day. The latest big investments are a new pig slaughterhouse in Nurmo, a logistic center extension and the introduction of the new meat product factory extension.
the pig slaughterhouse, inaugurated in April 2006, includes the most up-to-date technology. Investments of 21 million euro will double the capacity to 600 pigs per hour. The new line can handle 20 000 pigs in one week. The new slaughter house is a remarkable unit even at an international level.
The introduction of the logistics center extension in fall 2007 made it possible to double the number of handled deliveries from one to two million kilos per day. The new center is smaller than the old one (from13 000 m² to 11 000 m²). The efficiency, however, is a lot higher in the new one. Out of the 37 million euro investment in the new logistics center, ICT takes up one third, approximately 12 million euros. In 2003 Atria voted the Logistics Company of the Year.
Atria is one of the most modern meat processing plants in Europe and a market leader in Finland with a 29 percent market share. Besides Finland, Atria has production plants in Sweden (Sköllersta, Stockholm, Malmö) and in the Baltic countries (Vilna, Valga, St. Petersburg).
